About Northwestern (Farha Group)
The Farha Group’s research seeks to solve exciting problems in chemistry and materials science ranging from energy and environment related applications to challenges in national defense by employing atomically precise functional materials. By exploiting the modular nature of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) and porous organic polymers (POPs), we work to fundamentally understand the role of three-dimensional architecture in modifying a material’s function for applications in gas storage and separation, catalysis, water remediation and detoxification of chemical warfare agent simulants.
About the Position
A unique, best of both worlds postdoctoral appointment whereby candidates will be trained at a leading industrial company and academic group in the field of MOFs. As a postdoctoral researcher, you will be accountable for the technical execution of MOF-enabled solutions. The position encompasses the conceptual design of novel materials, small scale synthesis, and proof of concept experimentation to validate performance in targeted applications. This position will involve both fundamental and applied research, with a primary objective of utilizing New Product Introduction (NPI) processes to accelerate the commercial deployment of key innovations in the laboratory. You will work closely with our computational, engineering, and commercial team in delivering on customer and partner requirements.
Researchers will be sponsored by NuMat Technologies with a joint appointment at the Farha Group. It is expected that >75% of time will be spent at NuMat, with the remainder being spent at the Farha Group in parallel or sequentially.
This is a two year position located in Skokie, IL and Evanston, IL (greater Chicagoland). Competitive compensation commensurate with an industrial postdoctorate position.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Ph.D. in chemistry, materials science, or chemical engineering
- Strong coordination chemistry or organometallic experience
- Preferred MOF synthetic experience or strong background in organic synthesis
- Preferred porous material sorption/characterization experience (high-pressure, low-pressure isotherms) preferred but not required
- Experience in scale-up, process/system design, system testing, and programming would be beneficial
- Valuable know-how: zeolites, membranes, catalysis, chemical separations
- Strong verbal and written communication skills a must
